The lead actor for Christian movie Unlocked is partying hard and causing the producers much grief. Drugs, girls, tabloid headlines threaten the image and message that Jeremiah Productions want to portray. Brandon Paul has the looks and the fame to bring in the mainstream audience but refuses to be tamed. Bailey has to try out for a role in a movie Unlocked and she gets more than she bargains for in more ways than one. It’s no secret that Cody and Bailey are madly in love but will the craziness on life get in the way? Andi’s pregnancy is progressing. She is starting to grow attached to the baby and starts to have doubts about her decision. The book is centred on the making of the movie Unlocked, the challenges of Cody and Bailey’s relationship and Andi’s growing baby.

I love Kingsbury but Take Four was a slow and predictable start for me. It may have been consideration to readers that did not read the previous books. Initially there was too much emotion and not enough conflict. Thankfully Brandon came on the scene and spiced things up a bit. I also felt that Bailey’s character is so perfect that there was not much room for her to grow. Unlike Brandon and Andi where you could see how they matured as the story progressed. I will recommend the book because it shows the value of an uncompromising Christian. However this is not Kingsbury’s best work.

My verdict: Relaxing Read

The second section is about ten emotions that cause people to make bad choices. It explored practical and biblical examples to illustrate the point. The chapter on ‘Injured by impatience’ shows how impatience destroys relationships and distorts your perception of reality. It states frustration is an outgrowth of impatience. As the frustration mounts, you become angry or depressed at your inability to immediately make your life happen. Impatience can make you sick.

The third section of the book shows seven secrets to making great decisions. These included creativity, courage, and concrete information. A useful chapter was on contemplation, weighing the risk and rewards. It will help you answer pertinent questions. For instance – what impact will this decision have on the quality of my life tomorrow, next week, next month and next year?

This book is practical and easy to read. Each chapter ends with a prayer. It will enlighten you to identify the warning signs on the brink on making a dumb decision.

My verdict: Be smart and get the book.

Bittersweet Memories
Karen’s fiancé has done a runner with the church funds and the assistant treasurer. Bewildered, Karen moves in with her mum to lick her wounds. She did not bargain for her desire for solitude to be interrupted by the plumber next door. Will Karen dare to trust another man again?

This three in one book is basically a Christian Mills and Boon. The plot ideas were great, especially John’s Quest with a visually challenged character. However I was disappointed. The telling instead of showing emotion between characters killed the stories. The author intrusion where the reader was not trusted to read between the lines was frustrating. The books would have been improved if the characterisation had more depth. I liked Bittersweet Memories because unlike the previous two books, where it was the ladies coaxing the guys to God. Keith in the last book was the agent of restoration.

My Verdict: Great plot ideas that would have been riveting if the writing was tight.

A Woman Called Sage

She is now on the trail of the notorious McCaw brothers. She succeeded in bringing the ring leader to US Marshall Parker Timmons. She just needed to wait for her pay packet to be delivered, but has she walked into a trap? Further complication arise when two boys are kidnapped which forced her to work with Parker. On a dangerous mission, the two gallop off to the Rocky Mountains in Colorado. Will Sage's Indian Ute ways in the wild and Parker’s war experience keep them alive?

Mills skilfully shows the culture and prejudice surrounding Native Americans in that era. What I liked most about the book was the flawless characterisation of Sage. Strong and courageous yet in her private moments she had her wounds and insecurities. In some areas I thought the plot was a little slow. I also admired the non physical affection displayed in the book which was appropriate for the period it was written. The take away value was forgiveness.

My verdict: An edgy western style book with murder, suspense and romance. You will love it.

I must say I am impressed. I thought reading a teen fiction book would be painful. Out with the In crowd is book 2 in the Skylar Hoyt series. Skylar has given up her ‘raving’ days and turned her life over to God. Is life going to be simple? Not! Miss fashion queen now sees her friends in a new light.

She becomes ever so suspicious of her former partner in crime Jodi, Skylar is paranoid that the tables would be turned on her. eanwhile things at home are not looking good. Her mum and dad have an on-off marriage counselling saga, her younger sister is pregnant and the emotional pull is overwhelming.

Whilst reading this, I felt like Skylar new life as a Christian wasn’t portrayed enough in the book. However Morrill paced herself and nailed the message in the last few pages. It worked. The teenage dialogue was superb. The book was peppered with conflict and that was the real page turner. I thought the boyfriend issues were a lot for teenage girls to be dealing with. However the reality is; teenage girls are dealing with it so it needs to be covered. I would definitely recommend this book to any teenager.

My verdict: Teenagers would relate to the issues in this book

Book 1 – Asking for Trouble
Asking for Trouble’ is about Saavy Smith, a regular 15-year-old girl who is forced to adjust to her new surroundings after moving to England from Seattle. Saavy struggles to settle into her new life especially in her intimidating school. When she is presented with the opportunity to be a journalist for the school newspaper, she saw it as the perfect way to finally fit in. However; with her lack of experience and difference in language will she be able to secure a position on staff? We follow Saavy as she attempts to adapt to a new culture as well as maintain her walk with God.

Sandra Byrd has successfully created a character anyone could relate to, as we gain insight into Saavy’s innermost thoughts. I loved reading Saavy’s deep thoughts as well as about how her hardships affected her relationship with God. I enjoyed the frequent incorporation of scripture, which brought the whole message of the book into perspective. Despite her mistakes, I drew inspiration from Saavy’s persistence as well as her selfless nature, which she maintained regardless of what she faced.

I felt some parts of the book were not substantial to the overall plot; such as the emphasis of Saavy’s ‘au revoir’ bag, or her explanations of basic English words. I still enjoyed the whole story and felt that it was a suitable introduction to the world of Saavy. I was left feeling optimistic for the next instalment.

Book 2- Through Thick and Thin

‘Through Thick and Thin’ is the sequel to ‘Asking for Trouble’ and follows Saavy as she continues to build up her reputation in England. Saavy finally seems to be making friends when suddenly she is confronted with the taxing task of choosing between her reputation and her family.

Sandra Byrd did not disappoint with this one!

I found the plot to be a lot more fulfilling this time round with more elements of Savvy’s life to mull over. I felt the pressure of her conflicts and was glued to the pages as Saavy’s choices caused repercussions. I felt that teenagers would be able to relate more to ‘Through Thick and Thin’ than book one due to the many crucial decisions Savvy must make. It was filled with many important messages that can be applied to our day to day lives.

It was interesting to watch how Saavy’s rapport with the people around her developed as well as how the dynamics in her relationship with God shifted along with her choices. The end left me with a mix of satisfaction and anticipation for the next novel.

In conclusion, I enjoyed reading about the adventures of Saavy and felt the novels were very down to earth. The touch of realism applied throughout made the character of Saavy seem a lot less ‘far away’ and the events she went through very relatable. I would recommend this to all young girls who are taking the same journey of self-discovery as Saavy. After all, it can be very hard to remain true to oneself in a new daunting environment and the advice given in the books is very beneficial!

TAKE THREE by Karen Kingsbury

The above the line series is about two Christian filmmakers Chase and Keith determined to make a movie with a message that would change the culture around them. Take Three is the third book in the series. Andi, Keith’s daughter has been rebelling against God since the death of her friend Rachel. Now she is reaping the consequences of her actions and is faced with a major decision. Bailey and Cody are still dancing around the question of whether they are friends or not. Meanwhile the pressures and temptations of the movie world is getting to Chase and he may have to return home before he falls into sin and looses his marriage.

The book gives you an insight into the movie making industry, especially the battles you have to fight when you are doing it to glorify God. My favourite character is Andi, because a lot of young people raised in a Christian home could relate to her. Kingsbury effectively showed what Christian families should be like. Some parts were a bit too syrupy. My tiny gripe with the book was, readers were inundated with the Baxter characters from the Redemption series and though Kingsbury skilfully brought the reader up to date on who is who. I thought she overdosed on it a bit. On the whole the book was enjoyable and I recommend you get it.

My Verdict: Looking forward to Take Four

Hot Topic for Couples

The title is Hot Topics for couples, so was the book HOT? Yes it was. What I liked most was the book listed the views of several wives and husbands on key topics in most chapters. For instance in the chapter ‘Lead or Get out of the way’ Thirty bullet points were listed from different wives about how they felt about their husband as a spiritual leader in the home. Likewise the hubbies stated how they felt about the role as a leader. Interesting insight!

The book had a wholesome feel to it because it wasn’t just Steve and Anne telling you about their marriage but you can see the bigger picture of what other couples are facing. Other chapters included: Are you connected or co-naked, it shows that ladies and gents think differently on sex. The book covers the topic of friendship, parenting, money and old age.

The second part of the book is a study guide based on the first part. I like the style of the book and the fact that it was jointly written. It was a bit simplistic in the sense that it does not have anything that people may not have heard before. However the key is applying the nuggets in the book, because it is tempting to toss aside what sounds familiar.

My Verdict: Good book for couples to have in their library.

When was the last time you were angry? On a scale of 1-10 with “1” being mildly irritated and “10” being out of your mind with rage, where do you generally live? How did you express your anger? This mini quiz helps right at the beginning helps you determine where you are at! If you are prone to denial, please click away now.

Okay, assuming you are still here, and have made a decision that you do not want to be angry anymore. Chapman stated there are usually five coping mechanism for anger, suppression, visible aggression, hidden aggression, reaching out and resolution. She uses personal example from her everyday life to illustrate that pride indeed goes before a tantrum.

My favourite chapter is “Is honesty always the best policy”. She is not advocating that you lie, but before you say anything one must ask oneself, is it true, kind or necessary. There is also an excellent chapter in this book that most mothers would relate to.

I like the book because the chapter are simple and not preachy. The author keeps it real, and fills it personal example the everyday reader could relate to.

My verdict: I said the book was simple but I never said it was for the faint-hearted. Pick up only if you want to change.

How to reach your FULL potential for God

Do you want God’s best? The opening chapter poses the question and then proceeds to show the reader seven essentials to reach your potential for God. The essentials range from a clean heart, healthy body, right relationships to a balanced schedule. My favourite chapter was on using your gifts. Charles Stanley states that we have gifts and talents bestowed upon us at birth. These general gifts include our aptitudes, intelligence, emotions and interest. He identified and expounded on the seven motivational ministry gifts by showing how Jesus fulfilled each role.

The book rounds off with how to stay on course in your journey to fulfilling your potential. One of which involves pursuing only the opportunities that God send you. On the whole the book was easy to read with each essential chapter ending with a practical example to illustrate the main point. Though the title of the book grabbed me, I did not read the book with the same level of excitement.It may have been improved by having more practical examples of people that did and did not fulfil their potential for God.

My verdict: If you are not sure what your gifts are – this book might prove helpful.

He’s cheating. The conflict hits you between the eyes and the journey begins. What is eating hotshot Dr. Jonah Morgan? Apart from the fact that he never has time for his family, it is obvious that something is bothering him because he is drinking more than he should. The anonymous phone calls to the house phone does not ease his wife’s concerns. Faith is frustrated and hardly waits for Jordan’s dinner to digest before she starts nagging. Jordan is just as aggravated. Office politics, unmet conjugal needs and unresolved issues are mounting tensions in his busy life. Faith is not letting up until they have a proper talk. Faith accidentally finds out about Jordan’s childhood and starts doubting the foundation of their marriage. In the midst of all the marital turmoil an accusation at Jordan’s work is the turning point in their relationship. The plot of Secret and Lies is compelling. McKnight’s strongest point was the conflict and characterisation. The emotion was real in most cases. However she could have done shown the emotion of the mother of one of Jordan’s patient better, her son was at the brink of death. I have no complains with the dialogue. Good job, for a debut novel. It definitely has a strong takeaway value- communication and forgiveness.

My verdict: It kept me up till 2am right to the end. Need I say more?

Before the Season Ends

Impetuous Ariana has got it into her pretty head that she has to marry a man of the cloth. The only man of the cloth around was the rector who was in his sixties! Overwhelmed; her parents decided to send her off to her high society aunt in Mayfair, London. No expense is spared in adorning Ariana in the latest fashion. Malicious gossip links her with the notorious Philip Mornay, will her faith survive in the midst of all the distractions? The dialogue for Before the Season Ends is accurate for the period it was set in. That makes a change compared to the regency books I have read recently. Though it was obvious that Burkard did her research, the plot dragged on a bit. There was not enough conflict to engage the fickle reader. I had to read well into seven chapters and was about to give up before the story really started. The point of views was a bit confusing and sometimes messed up the flow. Characterisation was a plus though, Ariana had her faults and her character developed through out the story. If you like regency romance you may like it.

My Verdict: Okay read if you looking to unwind.

When the Nile RUNS RED

It took me a while to pick up this book but I am so glad I did. I thought the book would be intense and upsetting because it is set in war torn Sudan. However DiAnn did an excellent job of the characters that you understood the challenges of Sudan without getting too depressed about it.

Paul Farid who once persecuted the Southern Sudanese now has a price on his head since he converted from Islam to Christianity. He is married to American doctor Larson, who works long hours caring for the sick. Colonel Ben Alier is the veteran soldier and hero of Southern Sudan yet he has skeletons in his closet that are haunting him. All three face constant danger as tension mounts between the north and south Sudan.

Apart from impressive characterisation, Mills had the right balance between conflict and emotion. The conflict drove the story forward. The tender emotion between Paul and Larson sweetened the pill of the struggles of a suffering nation. The dialogue was realistic. Even when I thought there was a slight slip of Americanism in Ben’s dialogue, I later found out he was educated in the States so it was plausible.

This book was written with finesse that distinguishes between a seasoned writer and a novice. DiAnn Mills writing makes me smile.

My verdict: Informs you of what persecuted Christians have to face.

Double Minds

Emergency, Parker! Call Me! With a hook like that, you know you are in for a treat. Parker’s homicide detective brother continues to text her frantically. There has been a murder at Parker’s office. Parker is in the middle of a concert, striving to be a performer even though she is a gifted song writer. Meanwhile her songs are performed by her friend Serene who is the darling of the Christian music scene. Serene has issues of her own but it is inconsequential as long as she looks good on the surface. Serene wants to enter the secular market but needs Parker to tweak her songs for the audience. Parker is torn between staying true to the songs she believes God has given her and the irresistible offer her friend has made her. Parker is in a bit of a web, a murder investigation, a stalker and the conflict of laying down her ambition make a enthralling read. The characterisation is excellent and the suspense is thrilling without been frightening. Terri’s blend of unexpected twists, sprinkled with a touch of romance keeps the plot moving.

My Verdict: Gives you an insight into the music industry

The Visitor by Lori Wicks

Scoring: Three Star

This is book three in the English Garden Series. Alexander Tate had a horse riding accident which has left him temporarily blind. His Aunt Harriett arranged for one of the Steele sisters to read to Tate daily while he is recuperating. Tate was captivated by Cassandra’s voice and his intrigue developed into something more. Cassandra is not immune to Mr Tate either but wonders whether she could cope with a blind man if he never regained his sight. She also feared whether Mr Tate would find her attractive if he did regain his sight. The Visitor is what you read on a day you don’t want to think much, the plot moves forward but there is not enough conflict to hold the fleeting reader. The dialogue has improved slightly from book one but is still not convincing for a book set in 1812. The takeaway value is unmistakable. It is all about faith and trusting God to work things when all seems dim.

My verdict: Relaxing Read

Genstacia Speaks to Deborah Pegues - Author of Confronting without Offending

Genstacia: I enjoyed reading your books Financial Survival in Uncertain Times and Confronting without Offending. I know you are a Certified Public Accountant and so it is obvious that why you would write a book on money. Why did you decide to write Confronting without Offending? Did you have problems confronting people in a godly way?

Deborah: Confronting without Offending was the first book that I ever wrote. The current version is an update. I wrote it because people were always coming to me to complain about how someone had offended them. I became frustrated with all the “triangulating”-- Mary was upset with Sue but only told Joan. I thought, “Why don’t they just let the person know how they feel?” I concluded that the ability to confront must be learned. I needed to put a tool in people’s hands to let them know how to confront effectively. My favourite reference on this is Matthew 18:15 “Moreover if your brother sins against you, go and tell him his fault between you and him alone…” This is an unequivocal command.

Genstacia: Some people use different confrontation style in different circumstances. They may well have the ‘Let find a way’ style in a professional environment but with their nearest and dearest they may have “I’ll run away” style because they are worn down with dealing with recurring issues. Could you comment on that?

Deborah: Issues become recurring when there are no consequences, no boundaries, no guidelines that say, “If this behaviour continues, I will need to do this or that…” Boundaries without consequences are just wishes. Understand that the consequences don’t have to some drastic measure like getting a divorce. It could be something as simple as saying to your spouse, “If you insist on yelling, I’ll be forced to leave the room and not continue our discussion until you get your emotions under control.” Sometimes issues are recurring because we don’t do a good job of expressing our expectations.

Genstacia: What tips would you give people that may be right, but get really emotional when confronting and inadvertently turn their right into a wrong?

Deborah: I would say to pour out your anger and other negative emotions before the Lord before you confront. Make a commitment to yourself to allow the fruit of the Spirit to prevail in your discussion; temperance, long-suffering and love. Most of all, I think it is important to ask God to give you the exact words to say. When I feel myself getting angry or emotional, I breathe deeply and say to myself, “The Holy Spirit is empowering me now.”

Genstacia: I appreciated you dealing with the different personality types in the book. If a person is a dominant ‘engineer’ personality type –who analyses everything they hear yet their mouth has a ‘captain’ personality – where they are blunt in their communication. How could they draw a balance between not been touchy about what is said to them and been gentle about what they say to others?

Deborah: Since nobody has 20-20 vision on themselves, it is a good idea to give others permission to tell them when they are being too direct, too inflexible, or too whatever. Again, I always turn to the Scriptures for guidance. I constantly confess Isaiah 50:4 over my words, “The Lord God has given me the tongue of the learned, that I should know how to speak a word in season…” God really will give people the right words to say at the right time and in the right manner – but they must be vigilant about asking him to do so. My spiritual mentor always said, “Stop, think and pray before you speak!”

Genstacia: I see that you have written a lot of books, which one of them is most special to you and why?

Deborah: I love all the books as each is a divinely inspired gift from God. I probably appreciate 30 Days to Taming Your Tongue most because I didn’t set out to write it. I had messed up with my mouth—divulged a confidence thinking I was being helpful and it backfired. I was so ashamed that I put myself on a “tongue fast” after I studied every negative use of the tongue I could find in the Scriptures. This season of verbal abstinence really sensitized me to how often I allowed negativity to creep into my conversations. I changed my entire conversational style. I actually hate to hear gossip and I recoil at complaints. It’s been life changing for me and almost a half-million other people who bought the book. Talk about God turning a mess into a message!

Genstacia: Are you working on anything new that we should be looking forward to?

Deborah: I’m always working on something new! 30 Days to a Great Attitude will be out soon. In it, I set forth guidelines for conquering 30 negative attitudes that will derail personal and professional relationships. Also, I’m co-authoring a book with a pastor entitled Why Smart People Make Dumb Choices scheduled to be released in March 2010. We are really excited about showing people how to make the best moral, relational, financial, and health decisions. I’m excited about life and I’m not allowing all the other negative economy-related events that we face in our household to mar my joy. God is in charge of my life and he is doing a good job.

Most of the time I am brutally honest. It is not always appreciated. Needless to say the title of the book grabbed me. It starts off by distinguishing between confronting and retaliating. Deborah also clarifies that the bible commands us to confront in certain situations. When we face an interpersonal conflict we have three basic decisions to make. Whether to confront, when to confront and how to confront. I was more interested in how to confront.

People have different conflict management styles. There is the dictator, the accommodator, the abdicator, and the collaborator. It helps you identify your strengths and weaknesses in confronting difficult situation. Most interesting for me, was the section on strategies for an effective confrontation. It shows how bible characters such as David, Jethro and Peter confronted. Speaking the right words, listening and controlling your emotions are all effective tools in communicating your grievance.

The final section of the book is on confrontation and personality temperaments. Understanding the personality of the person who you are confronting is crucial. If confronting a choleric personality type (usually leaders) it is best to keep to the point. They are not usually patient for long explanations. The book was easy and simple and I love the fact that it devotes a chapter on family interactions.

My verdict: Conflict is an inevitable part of our life, so you need this book in your library.

Fiction Galore - Karen Kingsbury and Lori Wicks

Karen’s strong point as an author is her ability to write about life issues that the everyday person can relate to. This story was actually based on a real life situation. Eight years old Cory believed 49ers quarter-back Aaron Hill was his father. Megan Gunn his foster mum humoured him but was concerned that he is setting himself up for a fall. Cory’s hopes heightened when Derek Anderson another quarter-back for the same team as Aaron Hill decides to host a pizza party at the Youth Centre. Cory intends to pass on a letter to Aaron via Derek. Circumstances beyond Aaron’s control forced him to make an appearance at the Youth Centre and Cory wonders if he would have his big moment.

The story is really about the grace of God and how we live our lives between church services between Sundays. It gives excellent insight into what goes on behind the scene of American football stars. As usual Kingsbury scores full makes on the emotional aspect of the story. Sometimes I felt it was almost too good to be true. However the transformation of Aaron Hill self-centred life to the person he became is inspiring. The main takeaway for me in this story is the importance of prayer and living uprightly between Sundays.

My verdict: Entertaining and sobering story of God’s grace.

The Proposal by Lori Wicks
Publisher: Harvest House

The proposal is a minor part of the book. It is more about William Jennings whose pampered life changed dramatically when his relative died and left him with three children. When his youngest ward Penny fell prey to the cruel hands of her nanny. He is forced to seek help from his estranged sister. The character development in the story kept me turning the pages.

The book fell down on the dialogue. The proposal is supposed to be set in the 1810 London England, I am sorry to say the dialogue merely sounded like a ‘middle class’ person today. Even that was not consistent, characters said things like “Look right here” or “ ….I don’t want God having to pry my fingers off of them.” There is no way a British person would say that in this age, let alone in 1810. The dodgy dialogue amounted to author intrusion and it spoiled the flow of the story. The book shows that prayer and demonstrating the fruit of the spirit will transform a stubborn heart.

My verdict: Satisfactory story with a strong evangelical message.

I don’t like reading books on money it depresses me sometimes! However this is not the time to be ignorant, ignorance is expensive. Don’t be scared about the credit crunch or Mr Darling’s budget get some information. The first part of the book lays some foundation about how the US and the world economy got into such a financial mess. This bit is a tad technical, for the average reader. If you press in – a character you will need if you want get your finances straightened out, you will be enlightened and ready to action the second part of the book.

This is the exciting part. It shows you strategies on how to master your debt. It helps you identify your spending motivation. Deborah effectively shows that spending wisely is not about a lifestyle of deprivation. She coaxes the reader to embrace change for a while so that they could meet their financial goals. The book is full of biblical examples and illustrations from her personal life. It deals with good debt versus bad debt. I like the fact that is uplifting and it gives the reader hope, that financial independence can indeed be achieved. There was no sense of condemnation attached to it. It shows you how to create boundaries around your money and empowers you to make wise choices.

My verdict: It enlightens you on how to grab the reins of your finances

Genstacia: First of all congratulations on The List. It is a book that a lot of single Christian women can relate to. What inspired you to write it?

Sherri: Thanks so much. I’m really excited about this release. My inspiration? I always say that writing is therapy for me. It’s much cheaper than going to a shrink and I actually get paid to do it. I also get to bless other people and make them realize they’re not alone in whatever difficulties they may be facing in their lives. So The List was inspired by my experience as a successful, single, black woman, divorced over the past 5 years. It has been hilarious, painful, educational and so many other things. I realize that almost half of black women are in the same state that I’m in, I thought it would be fun to share the laughs and the pain. So far, the response has been great. Women have read the book and can relate completely.

Genstacia: You did a good job of showing the dilemma of a successful black woman dating a guy that is not financially independent. What advice would you give to a woman who is thinking of dating or actually dating someone like your character Isaiah?

Sherri: I think Isaiah’s situation was different in that he was a missionary and had a completely different lifestyle than the average person. If someone was thinking about dating or actually dating a man who’s in financial ruins, I’d say the most important thing to do is find out why. Is he coming out of a life crisis and putting things back together? Or is he just incapable of managing his life and his finances? If a man is financially responsible and just temporarily down on his luck after hitting a rough spot, it may be worth hanging in there. If a man is financially irresponsible and incapable of getting it together, then my advice is RUN, as fast as you can in the opposite direction. If you do decide to deal with him, keep your finances completely separate. Otherwise you will find yourself financially drained before long.

Genstacia: Angela was a bit of a perfectionist yet awfully naïve. Do you think there are lot of women like Angela nowadays?

Sherri: I wouldn’t say there are a lot of women like Angela, but they definitely exist. I think the main source of her naivete was her lack of experience with men. I do know a lot of shy, Christian women whose lack of knowledge of male/female relationships is scary. I would almost say I was one of them, just nowhere near as bad as Angela. I think the most important thing that Angela missed was that she was surrounded by a loving sisterhood of women with knowledge and experience. Had she listened to them, her situation would have turned out completely different.

Genstacia: I love the fact that Michelle had a support group she could count on. Single people could sometimes bury their head in their career, so they don’t take time to develop quality relationships? Usually this intensifies the pain of people that are desperate to get married. Could you comment on that?

Sherri: One of my favourite lines in the book is where Michelle looks around at her friends after crying about being ‘manless’ and says, “Maybe I didn’t have a man, but I had some beautiful, strong women in my life that loved me. For now, that would have to be enough.” I think it’s so important for women to develop a strong sisterhood with loving friends – especially while they’re single. Isolating oneself only makes the desperation of singleness much worse. Friends are also helpful when we do meet someone, they can help us see past the butterflies and determine whether a man is actually a good candidate or not.

Genstacia: I could see myself in at least two of your characters. Are you like any of them?

Sherri: As I mentioned, I used to be shy and nerdy around guys like Angela was. There was also a lot of me in the main character, Michelle. I do have to admit that some of the yucky dates in the book were actually real!

Genstacia: Nicole has become cynical because of her past. What advice would you give to women in her position?

Sherri: I would definitely advise someone like Nicole to let God work on her heart to get healed of all past relationships. Otherwise, one of two things happens. The person becomes bitter and will never be able to enter a healthy loving relationship. Or if they try to get in a relationship, it won’t work because the bitterness in their heart would drive a man away. Nicole needs therapy and a good cry. She also needs to forgive everyone that has ever hurt her if she wants to have any hope of ever loving again.

Genstacia: And Lastly Sherri, do you have A List?

Sherri: I do have a list. It was a pretty sketchy list before the last few years of horrible dates and yucky relationships. I do believe in saying what Michelle did in the book, “God, just send me Your very best.” I think the list is helpful in that we can recognize God’s best when He sends it and we’re able to weed through the riffraff to avoid painful, dead end relationships.

Whilst trying to cheer Michelle up, they decided to draw up a strategy to get a man. First of all they must get a list. Michelle, Lisa, and Angela draw up a list for their ideal man. Cynical Nicole and widowed Vanessa stood on the sidelines. The book scores top points on personal identification with the reader. Most single ladies over thirty could see themselves in the pages. The book starts off well with good content but could have been tighter. There were some areas Lewis could have shown rather than tell what was going on and that slowed down the pace. However once you leaped over that hurdle in the first few pages, you will really enjoy the book. Lewis used good characterisation and realistic dialogue. It has a strong takeaway value. It shows the importance of maintaining boundaries and gaining financial independence. You will see that it is vital to have friends that are willing to help pick up the pieces when things go pear shaped. The List reveals the frustrations, triumphs, unrealistic expectations and pitfall that single people experience.

Imagine a family who did not prepare their children for college. This would be unthinkable in today’s world. Everyone prepares their child for an academic future. Yes I like it! It has a different slant than other single books in the market. Okay, the title is not exactly PC (politically correct) but if that’s what it takes to get some people to wake up; so be it. The book kicks off with a mini quiz that would help you identify the profile of what Shaffer defines as a loser. The first section of the book examines key areas that create obstacles in relationships. Some include recognizing blind spots, defeating the fear factor and overcoming less than a stellar family. I appreciate her dealing with the family issues. She pointed out that our family background could greatly colour the way we interact in relationships. The second part of the book is on how to choose well. My favourite chapter in this section is on handling the challenges. She discussed the challenges of Christmas and Valentines Day. She also covers the challenge of risking again and the challenge of sexual desire. It parallels some other single books you may have read like the importance of friends and community. There are tools at the end of each chapter so that by the end of the book you will have a full relationship profile. The profile will shows you your dating record, your non-negotiable in dating, your top fears, your intimacy blockers and much more.

My Verdict: Refreshing, very handy if you keep making the same mistakes in relationships.

Fresh Grounded Faith: Devotions to awaken your spirit

This is an easy-going devotional with an analogy of fresh coffee to stir up your spirit. It is a good devotional if you need something to encourage you on your way to work, or during your lunch break at work. If you are looking for a bible study type devotional, this is not for you. Each devotional start with a story, some of them are about Connor, who is Rothschild’s first grade son. Those are bound to wake you up with laughter because the young man says some funny stuff. She uses each story to illustrate biblical principles. Each devotion ends with a section for your response, for prayer, and for praise.

The book is called Freshly Grounded Faith because like coffee, stale won’t do. Though this devotional is inspiring, personally it does not flick my switch. You may have to dig much deeper for your spirit to wake up in the morning. It does not have dates on it and it only has seventy- five devotions so it won’t take you through the year. I would recommend it as a lunch- time snack, because you may need a much stronger blend to wake you up in the morning.

Hot off the publishing press. No-Nonsense Dating released on the 1st July is one of the most practical books on relationships that I have ever read and trust me I have read many! No Nonsense Dating kicks off with dating myths, most of which you would regard as common sense until Dr Ronn hit on Myth no 10. It will wobble your comfort zone. The book is action orientated and it challenges the reader to define what you want. However before you pull out your designer list of what your man should be like. He coaxes you to first of all define your strengths and weaknesses so that you can market yourself well. Yes, he uses the analogy of marketing. Whether you realise it or not we all market ourselves, from the way we dress to what activities we choose to engage in. The book abounds in personal examples as Dr Ronn has more 20 years experience in relationship counselling. Two enlightening chapters for me personally was Show up and ‘Get in the Game’ and ‘Approach and Be Approachable’. These show how you could get a rounded life and position yourself for the possibility of a date. The book is straight forward and scores top marks for practical application. Are you a pleaser, controller, avoider or dreamer? How is this different from the other relationship books that I have read? It tells you how to take responsibility for your love life (or lack of it) in a godly way.
My verdict: Easy read but powerful impact.

Great title isn’t it? At an early stage in the book the author dedicates a chapter to show a great marriage is. Emilie Barnes has been married over 51 years so she is in the position to give a seasoned response on the subject. Single people this book is a preparation tool for you too. Emilie give sounds nuggets on the foundation of marriage in bite size information. She then progresses on issues beyond the wedding day.

Some of the contents of the book may seem like common sense stuff. However it is worthwhile because those are the stuff that people allow to slide. There were some eye-opening moments that gave me insight into how men are. There were clear explanations on the differences between men’s needs and women’s needs. For instance men are driven by their Eros drive and can move into sexual desire even before love appears. Women on the other hand generally are more emotionally oriented. It also shows why a woman may have an extra-marital affair.

What makes a woman feel loved covers how to become one though you are different. It includes a personality test so that you can understand the temperament of your spouse. The book is well written and easy to read. At the end of each chapter, it has a ‘pillow talk’ section. They are discussion points you and your spouse can indulge in. You will love it.

Interview with Heather Paulsen author of Emotional Purity.

GB: Your book is full of nuggets for single people to stay emotionally pure. What is the most important thing that you would like people to take away from your book?

HP: I remember my dad asking me this question before my first edition was ever released. I told him that my main goal is to have people take a new look at the importance of purity in their lives. I know I have some radical ideas, but I believe that the more you seek purity in your life, the more you move to a place of peace and joy. This is what I wanted for my readers: a deep desire for personal purity in their lives.

GB: Say you get yourself entangled emotionally in a relationship. How do you ease yourself out of it without causing animosity or having to make a lot of explanations for your aloofness?

HP: I think for some women they just have to be done with the relationship all together, however I think that so often what causes us to be emotionally entangled is our own actions. We call him, we seek out time with him, we over analyze things in our minds, we question all his actions, we over think his behaviour, we do a lot to foster the relationship.
I suggest taking a fast from pursuing any time with him, any contact with him and just see what happens. Often what happens is the guy doesn't even really notice it. You may have to share what your really thinking and just tell him that you have been convicted of the idea of saving your heart and this friendship is causing you to invest too must emotional energy.

GB: How should singles interact with the opposite sex without getting emotionally attached?

HP: When I was single and pursuing emotional purity I came to realize that I could have guy friends, however most of the emotional part came in my own thinking and manipulating of situations. I needed to treat young men as brothers in the Lord. How do brothers and sisters treat each other? They care about each other, talk to each other, spend time together...but they do not have hope of a long term relationship, they do not manipulate situations to be with that person, they don't day dream about live with that person, and they don't change their behaviour to cause that person to like them. Most of this interaction is going to come from our own mindset!

GB: What sort of boundaries should we put in place without building a fortress around ourselves?
HP: I had three questions I'd ask myself:
1) Would I treat him this way if he were married?
2) Would I think about him this way if he were married?
3) Would I talk to him about this subject if his wife were here?

These questions allowed me to fully enjoy friendships without over stepping any emotionally boundaries. I also, knew that I wanted to respect his future wife and my future husband, so this is why I used these questions to filter my actions!

GB: How did you recover after having an emotional attachment that did not work out?

HP: I sought God with all my heart, energy, mind...with my whole being. I wanted to fall in love with Him. I wanted to draw so close to His heart and I wanted to please Him with my life. I spent a lot of time in God's word and in prayer. I encourage all singles to use this season to pursue God WHOLE HEARTLY! Get to know how God communicates with you! This will help you remain emotionally pure. You'll know how the Holy Spirit convicts you and that will help you avoid giving your heart away prematurely!

I have two words for this book. Absolutely Fabulous. The book is a reality check for you to take stock of yourself. It equips you to prepare for love. The first advice that hit home was rather than looking for the perfect person, how about becoming the perfect person? Dr Hawkins mentioned that you have to be intentional about love and at the same time leave room for God.

Are you really Ready for Love is easy to read. It has plenty of practical scenarios to illustrate the points. It is unique from other books for single because it puts the onus on the reader to develop spiritually and personally. The book covers how to take a love inventory of yourself and how to eliminate sabotaging character traits. I especially like the fact that the author had done thorough research on the subject because he made some excellent references to other books on the topic of relationship.

My verdict- It’s one of those books you would read again and again.

The book starts with a girl called Molly Ann Mcpherson who’s preparing for her Summer Camp but is having doubts as to whether she’ll ‘fit in’. Molly’s mother casually tells her to “just be herself” however Molly didn’t’ know who she was.

The book contains a vast amount of scriptures, challenges and notes that encourage you to really be yourself and show you how as well. It’s also packed with little quizzes that help you to show your true colours and be the girl that God wants you to be!

It states that God shows you who you are, as you get to know him better. It’s the only way to know the unique you. The book states that the things around you such as race, gender, age, family, talents and tastes can affect you. Yet you must learn not to compare yourself to others and you need to be comfortable in your own skin.

You can’t possibly get along with everyone; there will always be people who are jealous of your talents so there’s no point in putting yourself down or being a small version of yourself. I like how the book shows that you can always look to Jesus as your shining example. It helps you build your self-esteem and be confident in being yourself around your peers.

The book is targeted at girls aged 8 to 12 years old but I highly recommend it to any girl between the ages of 9 to 15 years experiencing what the book calls a case of the “who am I?” It isn’t guaranteed that you’ll discover your true self straight away it’s a journey. It takes time. I think that at times the book can get a bit boring but generally, I think it’s a great read.

Just the title of the book was enough to grab my attention. Initially I thought it was about keeping your thoughts pure but that was not the angle, Heather was coming from even though she did cover that. The main essence of the book is about avoiding emotional counterfeit oneness as Dr Ron Rauniker of Choosing God's Best will put it. Emotional Purity starts off with a real life scenario where her characters Tracy and Mike were spending alot of time together acting like boyfriend and girlfreind but without defining the relationship. Essentialy they were conciously or subconciously using each and one of them was bound to get hurt sooner or later. You guessed right, it was the girl. Women are more emotionally wired than men and are more likely to read more into a situation than is actually necessary.

The chapters include, Creating Safe Ideals, Preparing for Marriage and Dating Done Differently. The book is written from Heather's personal experiences on her quest for romance. Ladies listen up- this book will teach you how to guard your heart, define the relationship, and arm you on how not to get emotionally intimate without a commitment. I like this book because a lot of emphasis is usually placed on sexual purity but not much talk out there on how to guard your heart. You may roll your eyes and say " Not another single book." Let me ask you this- " Have you ever spent endless hours on the phone or over the internet with a guy friend sharing your goals and dreams for the future- sharing a part of your heart that should be reserved for your spouse? If you even hesitated to answer I suggest you click below now and get your copy of Emotional Purity.

My Verdict: It's a quick and easy read and well worth it. I enjoyed it.

This is one of the most inspiring books I have read since the year started. God is my success is about finding the balance between surrendering to God and taking charge of your life. It's all about partnering with God to overcome your obstacles that prevent you from been the success that God has created you to be.

The book is well written and Larry Julian has ample credibility to write a book on success, He has spent a big chunk of his years climbing the corporate ladder only to discover it's not what it's cracked up to be nor was it worth all the painful personal sacrifices.

He advices the reader to pesevere in God's plan for your life while surrendering the outcome of the result to God. He was open about his personal life to illustrate his point.The real life illustrations were even more inspiring. He showed the reader how to handle lack of confidence, financial struggle, distractions and other things.

I disagreed with certain aspects of his chapter on Overcoming Fear and Worry however on the whole I would definately recomend the book. One of the highlights in the book for me was Larry Julian's account of when he felt stuck- he had invested too much to quit but did not have the energy to move forward. God is my success would help you reexamine your goals and motives. The book has extensive resources at the end of each chapter to help you work through the issues.

My Verdict- Highly recommended for the workaholic, the discouraged and frustrated.

GB: What motivated you to write a book on confidence?

Dr J: Five years ago I realised that my own insecurities was keeping me stuck in a lifestyle of limitations.

GB: Your books is full of rich nuggets that one should apply to their life. What is the single most important thing that you would like people to take away from your book?

Dr J: The importance of increasing your confidence so you can perform at your best and unleash your full potential in life.

GB: There are many books in the stores with the mantra "believe in yourself", what makes The Confidence Makeover different from the rest.

Dr J: My book is a day by day training tool that walks the reader through a personal transformation. You can tell a person they need to "believe in yourself" all day long, but if you do not give them the necessary tools to make it happen ...you are wasting your time.

GB: Even confident people get a bit shaky when entering a new territory and pursuing bigger things. What confidence tip would you give to those stretching out of their comfort zone?

Dr J: When you think you can't ....that is when YOU MUST!!!!! Remember, the only person who is a failure is the person who does not take massive action. The person who acts in the face of fear...is actually the successful person.

GB: You mentioned the comparison trap in your book, a lot of people fall into that trap at some point what can people do to get out of that thought pattern and avoid it in the first place.

Dr J: No1- Realise that comparison destroys your confidence.

No 2 Celebrate your own uniqueness. Nobody can do what you do, the way you do it. Don't be a cheap carbon copy of somebody else!

No 3 Only compete with yourself. As long as you are getting better, you are a success.

GB: You refer to yourself as The Confidence Coach, any reason? Surely all coaches inspire confidence.

Dr J: Every coach has an expertise in a particular field. My expertise is Confidence. Nobody knows more about the subject than me.

Do you know what it takes to be a man of God? Hey don’t get defensive I was only asking. Jack Graham’s book- describes what this kind of man is like and how he lives his life.

Man of God is divided into four parts, A man of God and His Master, then his integrity, his family and his ministry. Jack Graham is qualified to teach on these issues, he has written several other books and has been a pastor for a long time.

I found the section on A Man of God and His family most interesting. Though this book is written for men, it would not do any harm for single girls to read this book so they know the standard they should be looking for. The book shows how to love the lady in your life- it goes into detail about everything a woman needs- consideration, praise, conversation and togetherness to name a few. Are you having challenges as a dad? A Man of God will help you there too.

The book is jam packed with scriptures to illustrate the principles discussed. It is rich with nuggets to strengthen your walk with God.

My Verdict: It’s a worthwhile read.

Genstacia speaks to Debbie Maken: Author of Gettng Serious about Getting Married

In the cosy interior of The Ruben at The Palace, I connected with Debbie the minute she gave me an enthusiastic hands shake. Dressed in blue jeans and dark coloured trainers it was obvious that though she was quite serious about her message, she did not take herself too seriously. Within a few minutes of speaking to her I knew what was close to her heart- her girls, one is three and the other is seventeen months.

I asked Debbie to comment on the notion that- it is better to remain single than to wish that you were. She emphatically stated that we do not tell children that high school may be bad for them because other people dropped out. In response to the fact that the church may tell singles that they may not be ‘ready’ financially or emotionally for marriage. She said that is presumptive, men have been known to get their finances in order in six months. She said “We never get to a state of perfection where we are deserving of marriage.”

I mentioned there is a possibility that an idol has been made of marriage because it dominates the conversation of single girls. Debbie responds with compassion "The fact that women are so consumed by it, is a natural working out of their fears and frustrations, because God has designed them to be wives so it impacts other areas of their lives."

She was quick to defend that she did not ascribe fault to females for their protracted singleness as the book may be construed but she admits that there is something that can be done about it. She surprised me by giving a resounding YES to the fact that having legitimate sex is enough reason to get married. “It is the way God designed you.” She said in her enchanting American accent
“ Use your sex drive as a natural impetus to look for a marriage partner, of course you should not throw wisdom, judgement and discernment out of the window.”

When probed on the Scriptures like Proverbs 3:5 and Psalm 37:23 she used the example of Rebekah and Abraham's servant to fiercely argue her point. I challenged that Rebekah did not do anything about her single status she was simply going about her business. Her argumentative side kicked in, she use to work as a litigation attorney. She passionately stated that if Rebekah not met Abraham’s servant her parent’s would not have watched Rebekah go from 25, to 30 and then 35, and say they are still waiting on the Lord. They would have stepped in at 23 and helped her find a spouse. “The only reason we use verses like that out of context is to argue for passivity today, because we have a completely defunct mating system.”

I asked her about dating sites and she said all that does is create a bigger pool to choose from. She suggested that women could actively involve their parents or surrogates in the church that would help them search. She pointed out that she is not suggesting arranged marriages but- " it increases your chances of getting married in a timely fashion." I asked her if her Indian heritage made the option of matchmaking easier. She openly said it wasn’t easy- not because of her Indian culture but the Christian culture did not take kindly to her involving a matchmaker.

On a final note she states that God has ordained marriage to be a blessing. A lot of the social sciences have proved that those in good marital units have far more peace than singles not just materially but in every other way. She personally thinks that there is a dynamic quality to life because of children, which cannot be manufactured in any other way.

This book in unique in the sense that it took me a long time to decide whether I should review it. Yes, it is well written- in fact Jason is an excellent writer and a humorous one too, so reading the book was easy. Some of the content was hard for me to swallow but hey, I made a decision I would review the book on its merits and keep my personal opinion out of it so; read on.

Illian starts off the book by stating that a successful relationship is not about you, and we should not be dating for self- gratification. For those of you who do not believe in dating, bear with me or should I say him. He states that dating is the training ground for loving, and if we don’t learn to overcome life’s small complications and obstacles within a dating relationship, we will be completely unprepared for a lifelong commitment.

One of the chapters where I see eye to eye with him is on “meating” people – a lot of singles want to know where they can meet people without feeling like they are in a meat market. The book states that the church was never designed to be a matchmaking service.

His chapter on staying vertical is where I raised a few eyebrows – this chapter includes the sexual ladder ( from holding hands to sexual intercourse) and discusses what is permissible and beneficial and what isn’t. I would keep silent about my personal opinion on that and let you read the book and make up your own mind.

Jason is honest about his own personal experiences and the book is guaranteed to make you smile and laugh out loud. Undressed draws to a close with countless question and answer emails that is quite entertaining.

My Verdict: Hmm….get it and draw your own conclusion.

I have chosen How to pray for your wife as a book of the month because it is a book for men and it is centred on marriage. Without prayer marriages don’t work so this is an ideal book to start off the year since we need God to reconstruct the frail fabric of marriages today. It is also the season for men to take their delegated authority as spiritual leaders in the home.

The format of the book is similar to the best selling power of a praying series but not as wordy. This book is based on Proverbs 31 and split into thirty-one days of the month for the husband to pray for his wife everyday.

You may argue that you could use your bible to pray, I recommend it because of the bite size chunks you can do everyday of the month. Not only that the book would jumpstart your prayer life in other areas your wife may need prayer.

The book contains areas you could journal about, and provides room for you to record the answers to your prayer. The book covers all aspect of the Proverbs 31 woman, this include her entrepreneurial skills, hospitality, wisdom and watchwoman.

How to pray for your wife closes off with a study guide that could be used as a resource at men’s retreat and marriage seminars.

My Verdict- Husbands and to be husbands get it and start praying.

GB: Is it possible for girls/women to dress modestly and be fashionable at the same time?

SD: Sure, it’s possible to be fashionable and modest at the same time. You have to choose to select cute clothes that still cover up the body parts that need to stay undercover. Sometimes you have to buy a size bigger or have something altered at the seamstress.

GB: This issue of modesty and dress really goes deeper than just a fashion statement. You tie it to hedonism and a greater change in our society that is taking place. Please share what you have seen.

SD: Hedonism says “Whatever feels good do it.” It is an attitude of being free to do whatever you want to do and not feeling responsible for anyone else’s feelings. It actually is selfish and doesn’t consider how it could cause a brother to stumble. Another mindset of our society today is the post-modern mindset which doesn’t believe there is any absolute truth or absolute morals.

Post-modernism believes truth is always changing and people have to keep searching for it. They believe everyone determines their own moral values by experience and no one can say someone else is wrong or right because they didn’t believe like them. They believe everyone’s values and beliefs are equally right.

They don’t believe the Bible is the absolute truth so they reject the absolute morality that the Bible teaches. This is why some people would have a problem with modesty because they don’t accept the Bible’s moral boundaries. They want to cast off all restraint and boundaries to live their lives the way they want to.

The problem is, if a Christian lives with this attitude, they will cause others to stumble and will even bring great heartache and pain to their own lives.

GB: You talk about the process of being changed. If someone is listening who realizes that they need to change how they have been dressing what steps do they need to make other than just changing their dress?

SB: Change starts within the heart. The first step is surrendering your life to the Lordship of Jesus Christ. Jesus Christ not only died on the cross to save you from going to hell, cleansed you from sin, and destroyed Satan’s power over your life, but He also saved you to come alive inside of your heart and set up His Kingdom and rule in your life.

Once you surrender, then He has the ability to speak to you in your thoughts and you’re open to listen to Him. Without surrendering your will to Him, the Bible’s teaching on modesty might just sound legalistic. You’ll find that you have to keep yourself in an attitude of surrender to the voice of the Holy Spirit because each of us has a strong will that has to be submitted to His lordship.

Once you surrender, then begin to read God’s Word daily. As you read God’s Word, it will read you. In other words, it will talk to you in your thoughts. You’ll begin to bring your life into submission to the way God thinks instead of living by your own feelings and thoughts. Romans 12:2 says as we renew our minds by putting God’s Word into our lives, we will not be conformed to the world’s way of thinking, but we will be transformed in our thinking to think the way God thinks.

GB: What is the term ANS that you refer to and how does it relate to this issue of modesty and dress?

SD: The ANS is the Automatic Nervous System. It controls many organs and muscles in the body. It is involuntary and acts in reflex to our environment. A person has no control over the ANS because it functions involuntarily.

For example, when someone experiences sudden fear, the ANS reacts immediately without a person thinking about it and their heart rate increases and they may break out in a cold sweat. They didn’t decide to make their heart rate increase or break out in a cold sweat. It just happened.

Guys and girls are made up differently. The ANS in a guy is connected to his sexual system. A guy can be walking down a hallway when suddenly around a corner a girl is bending over showing the top of her thong as it rises above her low-rise jeans. Then she stands up and her breast cleavage shows under the tight blouse she’s wearing. Immediately, the ANS in a guy causes his heart rate to increase, his hands to break out in a cold sweat, his body to break out in a cold sweat, and he has to make a decision.

Does he look another way and get control of his thoughts, or does he keep looking and let his imaginations go wild? Most girls think that just because they don’t have a problem looking at a guy with no shirt on that a guy should be able to control himself and not have a problem if they want to show their body. Guys are turned on by sight. Girls are turned on by touch, but they can also be turned on if they think they are turning on a guy sexually.

GB: You are a mum of four, 2 boys and 2 girls, now just out of their teens. You have watched the change in fashion over the years as the trend toward more and more revealing clothing has taken hold of our culture. What advice would you give to other mums who face this struggle possibly with girls who desire to dress in fashion or with guys who face the visual battle of what they see.

SD: My advice to parents would be first of all to set a right example before your children with your own life so they have a standard to follow that helps them see a positive view of modesty and style.

I also suggest having them in environments (such as church or a Christian youth group) that encourages the same standards you believe and where there are other peers that dress in fashion and modesty.

Then I encourage parents to look for opportunities to talk about experiences where people had trouble because of not having boundaries with the way they dressed and stories about those who have had positive things happen because they took a stand for modesty.

Parents teach by example as well as in sharing with their children as their children are growing up, that everything in our life is based upon surrender to Jesus and our love for Him. That’s what my whole book is about, if we can get this across to our kids then as they grow older they will make their decisions and choices and do according to what Jesus would want them to do in regards to their dress, in regards to what they do with their lives, their relationships. It’s really about living a personal relationship with Jesus Christ in a life of surrender and in love for Him, that you want to live for Him and Honor him. This relationship with Jesus Christ will really affect everything in our lives.

GB: What advice would you give to single ladies over 30 that are frustrated and are under a lot of pressure from people, just like your main character Charmayne?

TW: My advice is to not focus on not having a man. I think single women are able to accomplish a lot of things that may be out of reach for them once they become tied down with a family or husband. The more you enjoy being single, the less baggage you'll have when your prince appears.

GB: Do you think Charmayne would have got herself into the situation she did with Travis if she had support from her mother and sister?

TW: Charmanye definitely needed more wise counsel. I think if her friend, Lynette, had looked at Travis objectively, she could have been a great resource. Sometimes the opinion of a friend is weighed more heavily than a mom or sister.

GB: Do you think society has a lot of guys like Travis who prey on rich vulnerable women?

TW: I think there are men who capitalize on vulnerable women in general, not just
rich ones. And it also goes the other way too. There are many insecure men who
are preyed upon by women. With African American women, it seems that there are a lot of Travis' out here, because so many times we're more financially successful than our brotha counterparts.

GB: What would you like reader to takeaway from you book?

TW: The message in this story is to trust God for His will for your life. Charmayne had so many common sense and spiritual warnings that Travis was toxic for her, but she allowed her loneliness to overshadow those warnings. Also, even when we make mistakes, God can use our missteps to minister to someone else. God used Charmayne with a crack addict and the women at Dove's Haven.

GB: You have five children-what is you writing schedule like? What advice would you give to aspiring writers who are challenged in the area of time management?

My writing schedule is crazy. I don't have anything in place - I just write when I'm inspired. Time management is definitely a challenge, but I have no problem with dishes not getting done if I'm on a roll. I also have a great support system with my husband. He understands that even though I'm at home, I'm working too.

GB: I really enjoyed your book and I know others will too. What should we look forward to after Father than I meant to go?

TW: I recently finished my third manuscript called On This Walk it's about a young reporter who wants to uncover a mega-church scandal to launch his writing career. I'll also be doing a US tour of the gospel stage play based on my first novel, What a Sista Should Do. Five powerful principles are shared on how to overcome your issues. It also has journaling moments, which allows you to pause and reflect. The book does not provide easy answers it compels you to confront issues you may have neatly tucked away.

This book is great, I gobbled it up in two days, and it was captivating.

How could an intelligent lady, Ms Money bags to put it mildly end up loosing everything and almost her sanity over a smooth talking, fine looking brother? One word-desperation, actually it goes much deeper than that…. read on!

Charmayne Ellis president of a successful bank is overweight and the brunt of cruel jokes. Charmayne was slowly pushing forty and silently suffering ridicule from her mother and disdain from her sister and close friends.

When handy man Travis Moon; a guy that could grace any cover of a magazine showed up in her office, Charmayne thought her prayers have been answered. Against her better judgement, spiritually grounded Charmayne threw all caution to the wind and grabbed Travis with both hands. Her decision took her further than she wanted to go.

Before you say “Oh that would never happen to me” please read this book.

The book shows that unresolved issues would make you do things that you would never dream would happen to you. It covers self esteem, weight issues, setting boundaries, and of course the pressure on single women in a church setting.

My Verdict: Girls this is a most read. Serious Issues written in a hilarious style.

This book is great for group discussions.

Do women lust to be lusted after? What causes cold sweat, hot flashes and rapid heart beats? Where is the appropriate place to be sexy? What is your motive for plastic surgery?

Let’s dig in. The main ethos of the book is that you are been watched and what you wear sends signals to guys whether you are aware of it or not. The book starts off with defining what modesty is and explores what has caused society to change.

One of the chapters “In your Face” Legs, Breast, Bellies and thongs discusses the thong issue. Do you wear them and how? Hmm moving on! Ms Daugherty states that though many may argue it prevents their panty line from showing she states your panty line would not show if your trousers were not a snug fit. She argues that a thong does more for a guy imagination than a normal panty line.

Another topic of hot discussion is who’s seducing who? This chapter distinguishes a flirt from a friend. Do you walk with a certain move of the hips, do you slowly cross your legs when sitting down whiles purposely revealing enough leg to draw a man’s eyes to look.

This book is written with passion, whether it is strong enough to change the minds of the main culprits remains to be seen.

My verdict: Guys you need this just as much as the girls do!

I was really excited to read this book as I have listened to Dr Winston’s teaching on the subject.

The book states that we have to live from the inside out that is living from our spirit by faith instead of living by the flesh from pay cheque to pay cheque. He stressed that real wealth doesn’t come by education; it come by revelation.

The book instructs you how to operate in the kingdom. One of the key principles is God is not moved by need, he is moved by faith. The believer has to switch systems from the Babylonian system of buying and selling to God’s kingdom system of sowing and reaping.

The Kingdom of God is an instruction manual on how to walk by faith and be a true ambassador for the kingdom of God. I would recommend it if you have not heard the audio teaching, if you have then you do not need the book.

My Verdict- It has life changing nuggets.

Luke’s passage by Max Davis is a poignant book of a young man’s journey from personal guilt to peace with God and his past.

Luke was a typical American golden boy, good looking with bright prospects ahead of him as a baseball pro. That was until the tragic day that his beloved Haley slipped away after an accident with a baseball bat.

Disillusioned with God and disgusted with himself Luke had a death wish so he ran to the army and enlisted to fight in the Viet Nam War. In the army he connected with Sammy who demonstrated to him the love of God and the power of selflessness though he was a victim of racial prejudice and segregation.

From Mongolia Springs to Viet Nam and then back to Mongolia Springs Luke's passage developed his character, and taught him to love again.

This book is inspired by a true story and it strikes the chords of the heartstrings. It covers the helplessness parents face when their child suffers. It sensitively covers the racial tension in America at that time. This plot of the book is easy to follow and I was hooked from the first page.

My Verdict: This book leaves the reader satisfied and would teach you how to deal with the injustices and disappointments in life.

Sitting across the table from composed Mr Bunn, you are more likely to think he wrote a textbook than an action packed thriller that would make your heartbeat thump. On second thoughts, he has had a well-travelled career and this shines through in the book.

The book starts with a slow trot; Val Haines wakes up in a cell with amnesia wondering who he was. Meanwhile the top guns at Insignia are waiting anxiously for news about the ‘bombings’. The book gathers pace into a high-speed corporate enigma.

Val Haines slowly realises that his life is in grave danger, yet saintly Audrey beckons. Val knew she was significant in his blurred past but was not sure if he had the courage to dig up old wounds.

Embezzlement. Protracted family feuds. Personal Vendettas. Corrupt cops. These made Lazarus Trap sizzle!

Davis Bunn is an excellent writer; personally, I was more impressed with his writing skill than the actual plot. The book has a take away value of forgiveness.

At last, a married woman who understands what single women face!
She admitted that despite a successful career, great friends and a growing relationship with the Lord. She was lonely. As offspring of Adam and Eve, we too have a spouse-shaped hole that only a husband can occupy.

She discusses what single women are told like: “Wait on the Lord”, “Jesus is all you need”, “Being single equals knowing and serving God better.” The book is thought provoking and highly persuasive. Though I do not agree with every single issue discussed yet it shifted some of my attitudes about marriage.

He had a whole chapter on why some women remain single even when they want to get married. The book closes off with 101 places to meet your soul mate. Enough said!

The book closes off with real life testimonies on how some ladies met their husbands their ages range from 36 to 51. They shared personal experiences including their mistakes without being sanctimonious.

This book covers how God led Derek Prince to his first wife and the second after the first died. This books shows how both sexes can prepare for marriage. It shows the role of parents and pastors. This book covers special situations like divorce and remarriage, celibacy and goes into detail about what the Word says about it.

Book Review (Fiction) -The Witness

This book is not a good idea if you have to catch a plane early in the morning or you have an important meeting in which you need to be alert. Why do I say that? Dee Henderson’s latest book has the potential to keep you up well into the early hours of the morning.

At least that’s the effect it had on me. I thought "One more chapter, one more page ....." and the next time I looked at the clock it’s well past 1 am. The Witness is a hot page-turner!

Amanda Griffin is on the run after witnessing a harrowing crime; her family thinks she is dead. Police chief Luke Grainger finds himself entangled in the case on more than a professional level. Amanda’s sisters discover a family secret which, opened them up to new danger.

Meanwhile brutal murders indicate that someone was after the Griffin women. Was it about money, or was someone trying to get even with Amanda? This book is a mixture of homicide, suspense and tender romance with evangelism thrown in.

My Verdict: It’s an entertaining read.

Dee Henderson is a leader in the inspirational romantic suspense category, her books have won or been nominated for several prestigious industry awards. Watch out for her new book called Before I wake due out in October.

What about The Da Vinci Code?

Did I hear “huh?”

Well stop dithering and get some knowledge on the hottest topic around!
Did Jesus marry Mary Magdalene, did they have children, did they kiss or not? It not enough to say “Of course not!” What is your argument?

This book refutes the theory that Jesus was married, slashes the assumption that it would have been un-Jewish for Jesus to be single and rips to shreds the claims that there were more than eighty gospels for the New Testaments and only four were chosen.

It gives strong historical fact on how the New Testament Gospel was assembled and settles the Holy Grail and Holy blood issue. I must say that this book is a tad technical however I have included an assortment of books answering questions about the Da Vinci Code.

My Verdict: This is well worth reading; it will equip you better for evangelism.

Could you do with a little rest? A little balance? A little more time to do what you need to do –or even better, what you want to do? The time of your life promises to help you do just that. This book is not about getting organised, or about time management it is about getting to the root of our problems with time and schedule which involves embracing who we are and who God has created us to be.

Susie does an excellent job of identifying the time traps; this will enable us to avoid making unhealthy schedule choices. Some of the traps include inappropriate panic, missing God’s appointments, discontentment, and toxic busyness. The latter section of the book shows how we can have the time of our life and clear the way for joy. This is done by getting real about our schedule, learning to say NO. She states that YES is even more powerful than saying no when we reject the things that are not part of God’s call so we can open our heart to what is.

The book is straight to the point, with many practical illustrations that every woman could relate to. At the end of each chapter there are time out exercises that would reveal your attitude to your time now; and get you on the path to having the time of your life.

My Verdict: It taught me to manage my priorities rather than my time!

This book is my recommendation if you desire a more intimate relationship with God.

To Know Him is all about putting first things first by making time with God your highest priority. Gloria Copeland states daily communion with God is absolutely vital to your success because victory is won first in the heart and then in the circumstances.

The book is written in a simple style and it will hold your attention. The book covers the simplicity of the Christian life. She explains that God wants us to do the right thing, yet He wants us to do those things because we have a heartfelt desire to do them. It’s only by spending time with God that we develop those kinds of desires.

Gloria shows you how to please the Father, how to stay connected to heaven, how to hear from God. The takeaway value for me in the book was that I had to make a quality decision to spend time with God, hence spiritual aggressiveness and diligence is the key to really know Him.

To Know Him reiterates what every believer should know, but it serves well to be reminded!

My verdict: It stirred me up spiritually.

Gloria Copeland has written many books, including God Will for you, Walk with God, God’s Will is Prosperity, Hidden Treasures, and Are You Listening? She is a noted author and minister of the gospel whose teaching ministry is known through out the world.

Are you caught up in a web of confusion about your life? You may be satisfied but deep down you know that you are not fulfilling your greatest potential. Maybe it’s time you Listen to your life. Life Coach Valorie Burton’s purpose of the book is to help individuals find their unique path to extraordinary success. Extraordinary success means living with purpose in key areas of your life, spiritual, relationships, physical health and environment, work and finances and resources.

Ms. Burton uses the principles of connection to show how you can get in touch with God, yourself and others. She gives tell tale signs and indicators to show what your life may be saying about connection. Is your finances in disarray, is your life a monotonous routine, do you feel lost or unsure of your purpose or what direction to take in life? These are all telltale signs that you need to make a stronger connection. She illustrates her point by using a real life example of a personal friend that got herself on The Oprah Winfrey Show simply by being more in touch with herself.

The chapter moves on to how to examine your fears, and question your challenges. It illustrates how you should overcome them and move on towards success. Self-curiosity will help you identify your values and passion, and enable you to express them in your daily life. It involves listening to your emotions, and asking expansive, probing and action questions. I must warn you the exercises in this chapter is gut wrenching, but it will lead you out of vagueness into self-awareness.

Listen to your Life is an absorbing book and it is tempting to whiz through the pages. I encourage you to stop and do the mini exercises and take the time to absorb the nuggets. It may even be useful to make notes as you go along, you will get so much more out of it that way. The chapter on expectancy posed a personal challenge for me. People who are expectant make preparations; they are willing to persevere until they get exactly what they want. So I ask you the readers, what are you expecting? Only you can answer that. However your daily activities are a vital a clue is to what you are really expecting.

I can tell you what to expect from this book, it will inspire you to live life to the fullest and motivate you to get out of mediocre street and seek out the path God has ordained for your life. It will help you understand some of the events in your life even the negative ones. This book will teach you to flow with the twist and turns in life and cajole you into a mindset of abundance. Listen to you life is an enlightening read and has the potential to change your life for the better.

My verdict: An important investment toward living a purposeful and successful life.

Don’t switch off if you are single, this book relates to everyone not to mention the fact that you will arm yourself with information so you better understand your ‘boo’ when he shows up. If you are already married, listen up because this will spice things up not just for Valentine’s Day but also for the long haul of you marriage.

What is your love language? Well if you have a blank look like I initially did the five Love languages is for you. According to Gary Chapman the languages are words of affirmation, quality time, receiving gifts, acts of service, and physical touch. Gary who is an internationally known marriage expert states that he may send you flowers but all you really want is time to talk. She gives you a hug but what you really need is a home cooked meal, the problem isn’t with your love - it’s your love language!

When two people speak different love languages both of them become frustrated and their love tanks become empty and this could create tension in a relationship. Gary proposes that the spouse takes the time to find out what each other’s love language. This is done is by observing how the other person expresses love and love them in the way they can clearly perceive. What makes one-person feel loved emotionally does not always apply to the other person.

The book illustrates how words of affirmation from a husband gave his wife the courage to take the necessary steps to get her article published. Physical touch is not always sexual. A tender hug communicates love to the child whose primary love language is physical touch. The same is true for adults. Sitting close to each other on the couch as you watch your favourite television program requires no additional time but may communicate your love loudly. Hugging your spouse before she goes shopping may not only express love, it may bring her home sooner.

At the end of each love language chapter Gary gives practical examples of how you could implement your spouses love language. There is also a quiz at the end of the book that will reveal loud and clear what your love language priority is.

Ladies and Gentlemen, singles and married this is a book that applies to all of us, it covers issues both from a male and female perspective. Personally I understand my love ones and myself much better.

My verdict: It will help you awaken love in your relationships.
